ABOUT SEA KAYAKING IN NEW ZEALAND

Sea Kayak Operators Association of New Zealand

New Zealand is a land of contrasts and a sea kayakers haven. Fiords, sounds, volcanic islands, sweeping sandy beaches and peninsulas dominate much of our coastline while the inland landscapes in many areas offer unparalled fresh water paddling on our many lakes. The incredible array of water and landscapes in a country so small provides something for everyone from estuarine areas rich in birdlife in the far North to the mist shrouded peaks guarding the fiords of the South. The short travelling distances between paddling destinations allows for a variety of kayaking experiences for the keen within a short time frame as you move from area to area.

Most kayaking companies in New Zealand who are members of SKOANZ will have both Guided and Independent Rental options available to people wishing to go sea kayaking in their area. Which type of trip you choose to go on will depend on what you wish to get out of that trip and what kayaking experience you already have. Note in some areas operators will only allow experienced kayakers to rent their kayaks due to local conditions. For more information on the equipment provided and Guided and Rental options use the links on this web site to go directly to the individual operator web sites.
