Marlborough Sounds With a 1500km coastline, this ancient system of drowned river valleys is a sea kayaking Utopia. The vast expanses of water extend from the open seas of Cook Straight, inland through the maze of bays and hidden coves of the Queen Charlotte and Pelorus Sounds, to the port towns ofPicton and Havelock. The steep surrounding hillsides are covered in lush sub tropical rainforest, interspersed with pockets of regenerating bush, while on the water dolphins and seals are common place. All the major sea birds found on the waters and the Island sanctuaries (accessible only by water) successfully breeding Kiwis, Saddlebacks and Tuatatra, make the Marlborough Sounds a delight for nature lovers. Whilst the intimacy of the coves and bays provide the ideal day trip, the vast expanses of the Outer Sounds offers trips of unlimited duration. The coastline is well serviced with a network ofDoC campsites and accommodation houses, most with regular water taxi services. Sea Kayak outfitters servicing the Marlborough Sounds are located in Picton and Anakiwa.
