Sea kayakers in Auckland are spoiled. In their backyard is, probably, the most diverse and accessible sea kayaking playground one could hope for. It is only the fickle weather, degree of skill and experience, and imagination that limit those venturing out into the Hauraki Gulf - Auckland's sea area. Many visitors look at Auckland as a 'gateway' to the rest of New Zealand however, the harbours and islands that surround the City provide a wide range of sea kayaking destinations. The most dominant feature in the harbour is Rangitoto Island, it's volcanic peak providing excellent views of the surrounding area. Closer and more easily accessible is Motukorea, or Browns Island. This small volcanic island provides an excellent half-day or evening kayaking trip. North of the city is Tiritiri Matangi Island and the islands of the Mahurangi area. Some of these have been repopulated with native birds, including Kiwi, and have regenerating bush. Many sea caves and beautiful white sandy beaches are easily within reach. Kayak outfitters are located both on and off the water and some will pick-up from inner City accommodation.
