At 22,530 hectares Abel Tasman is New Zealand's smallest national park. The coastline stretchs 91 km from Wainui Inlet in the north, to Marahau Estuary in the south. Exploring the coastline by sea kayak is one of New Zealand's adventure tourism icons. The Abel Tasman coastline is characterised by near-shore islands, sheltered waters, estuaries and golden sand beaches. A marine reserve is home to a NZ Fur seal colony; and marine and terrestrial birds are abundant along the coastal margin. Lodges and Department of Conservation campsite and huts are spaced along the coastline. The coastline is also well services by water taxis, thereby enabling one way seakayaking trips integrated with a hike back along the coastal track. Kayak itineraries are typically 1 to 5 days duration, with commercial sea kayak outfitters operating from the southern entrances to the park. The park is sheltered from ocean swells, and enjoys a mild climate in New Zealand's sunniest region, making it an excellent place to visit throughout the year.
